Victoria’s shadow transport minister has hit out at the Andrews Government for crippling the state with $200 billion of “astronomical” debt after the estimated costs of the Suburban Railway Loop quadrupled.
New analysis revealed that building the first two stages of the state's SRL would cost $125 billion, more than double the government’s estimate for the entirety of the project.
The entire project was initially going to cost Victorians $50 billion - the most expensive in the state’s history - when announced in 2018, raising questions around how well the Premier is managing the state’s budget. Victorian shadow transport minister Matthew Bach has called the Suburban Railway Loop a"dog of a project". The member for Eastern Metropolitan Region said the project would cripple Victorians with “astronomical” debt which was already higher than several states combined. The SRL portion - Cheltenham to Boxhill - would be axed, with funding moved into health care if Matthew Guy was elected.
