I found a beautiful glass ring in a marketplace on my recent trip overseas. I bought it for a song, and slipped it excitedly on my finger. It represented the freedom and joy I was feeling on my holiday, a sensation I wanted to retain once I returned home.

I live a privileged life in a privileged country. But being away from my responsibilities made me realise just how much drudgery my regular life involves. Like most of us in the sandwich generation, I work, I look after the house, I look after my kids, and I try to be a good daughter. I am constantly juggling the needs, schedules and issues of my family along with my own. There is constant responsibility and an endless, rotating to-do list, and little unadulterated relaxation.
