The University of Tasmania's proposed move from the Sandy Bay campus faces passionate opposition from some residents and city retailers — but student opinions are mixed.
He said that combined with online learning becoming more embedded in his courses, there was less opportunity to meet other students in his cohort, and in other faculties.
"We think it's fairly likely that the move is going to go ahead, so we want to make sure that we're not missing out on the opportunity to give students a voice as to what that future campus might look like," Ms Crothers said."Lots of lots of students are against the move but I also think there are students that are either just a bit sort of ambivalent toward it or are quietly for it but don't want to engage in the debate," she said.
She agreed that at face value, the plan to move into the city would limit the student experience, but that the union would lobby the university to ensure the new student experience in the CBD was positive.University's Vice-Chancellor Rufus Black said the university would press on with its plan to move from Sandy Bay to the city.
"If you actually do look in the social media feed or in comments columns, you'll find a much greater plurality of voices and they are the people who really care about these issues of accessibility, affordable housing … but they're not necessarily organised as a vocal opposition group, which is what we have."
