Drug reform is shaping up as one of the major policy issues for the Minns government. With a drugs summit on the horizon, there are calls for cocaine to be legalised as well.

abc.net.au/news/nsw-greens-cocaine-legalisation-suggestion/102675042A spate of gangland shootings has prompted debate about whether cocaine should be decriminalised or even legalised in New South Wales, with one leading expert saying time is running out for drug reform. The Minns Government has committed to a drug summit in its first termThere has been a string of shootings across Sydney in the past month, since the morning execution of drug kingpin Alen Moradian at Bondi Junction.

Greens MP Cate Faehrmann has seized on those comments, and is now calling for cocaine to be legalised. "The worst thing for the drug lords right now would be a legal market, that's what they would fear the most," Ms Faehrmann said on Tuesday. A recent survey of waste water samples from around the country showed Sydney and NSW was the cocaine capital of Australia.Ms Faehrmann said making the drug legal would disrupt the business model of criminal groups and allow it to be regulated, in a similar way to alcohol or tobacco."We're just doing the same thing day in day out. I think the only people who think that what we're doing is good is the criminals themselves.

NSW Shadow Health Minister Matt Kean said such calls undermined the efforts of police, arguing the focus should instead be on "strong law and order policies" and ensuring there were the health resources in place to help those with addiction.
