Police have fatally shot a man after he shot at his former partner and her children in a small Queensland town.

He fired further shots at another vehicle and police cars.

"When he attempted to get fuel from another person, police responded to that incident," Superintendent Craig Hawkins said.Specialist police officers who had travelled from Brisbane located the man at a Glenbar Rd house on Sunday morning. Superintendent Hawkins told reporters the man shot at police from an elevated position when they arrived and charged at them with a weapon.It is unclear how many shots he fired, but no one else was injured.

The incident is being investigated internally, under the supervision of the Crime and Corruption Commission.
