After a calamitous setback, an off-grid luxury retreat on a Pittwater pontoon is back, bigger and better than before – as long as there’s no southerly blowing.
Then, in September 2020, it burnt down, much to the distress of Anderson and his wife, Ashlea, who was heavily pregnant at the time. “It was extremely heartbreaking,” he says. “But the important thing was to come back with something better.”
The afternoon was sunny and calm. So we loaded the bubbles and charcuterie into the picnic basket and puttered out across the water in the tiny tender provided for guests, no boat licence required. Here, on a bank of the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, which lines the western flank of the Pittwater with ancient forests, sandy bays and sandstone outcrops, we threw out a fishing line.
We turned in for the night in the linen bedding by Cultiver, and this is where the idyll unravelled a little. With a southerly wind picking up, I found I could not sleep at all. The slight bobbing did not bother me but the water rippling and rolling beneath the pontoon sounded like... well, I had a long wakeful night to think of good similes before I gave up and shoved toilet paper in my ears: a bunch of baby elephants jostling in a giant bathtub.
