The Age reflects our community: progressive, forward-looking, compassionate people.

The Age reflects our community. We are a progressive, forward-looking, compassionate people.- you. I have been thinking a lot about what rolewas because of my increasing concern in recent years about the media becoming so polarised, reflecting perhaps the polarising of our community. I worry that if people only read or watch what they agree with, the chance for us to have conversations and debates about our big and complicated challenges diminishes.

We aim to be tough and fair, to seek as far as we can the truth about any issue. That’s not an ideological position and it doesn’t mean we sit meekly on the fence. It does, in my view, lead to more interesting, dynamic, surprising journalism that may be useful tonewspaper editor, Harold Evans . When asked by an interviewer a few years ago what was the one immutable rule of journalism, he answered: "Things are not what they seem on the surface. Dig deeper, dig deeper, dig deeper". He also said, "Just find out what the bloody facts are".So, at my desk at home, with the sun out and hope for relief for all of us from these long months of restrictions, I welcome your feedback and your suggestions.
