Billy Smith told of how, after suffering his third ACL tear, he felt so guilty he couldn’t face his teammates. Experts explain why such a response is common.
When Sydney Roosters centre Billy Smith suffered a third ruptured anterior cruciate ligament last week, consigning him to another long spell on the sidelines, he said he felt so guilty he couldn’t even front his teammates in the sheds after the game.
St George Illawarra assistant coach Matthew Elliott is the co-founder of health and wellbeing business The Change Room, and said Smith’s feelings of guilt and having let down his teammates were extremely common among injured players. “It is a reasonable response to have, it wouldn’t be unusual ... by your third time [injury] you have had a lot of time and investment,” Keegan said.He also said younger players experienced emotions of guilt and loss because they were less likely to have thought about alternative career options, having never expected their sporting career to end so suddenly.
