South Australia's Parliament has the worst female MP representation in Australia, with gender parity unlikely to be reached before 2050, a new report finds.

South Australia's Parliament has the worst female representation in the country and won't reach gender parity until 2050 at the current rate, a report has found.

"At the current rate, women will not reach gender parity in the South Australian Parliament until 2050."As of August this year, 29 per cent of SA parliamentarians were women — 7.9 per cent below the national average, 8.4 per cent below the Commonwealth and 28.5 per cent behind Australia's current leader, Tasmania.

Mr Marx said while most parliaments around the world had increased the percentage of female MPs, South Australia had actually gone backward."Following the 2006 state election, female members held 17 seats in the House of Assembly, or 36.2 per cent of all seats," he said. "While quotas are something that people sometimes frown upon, it has helped the Labor Party reach parity."
