Before the world of air conditioning or even ceiling fans, Bob and Maureen Copeland lived in one of Mount Isa's tent houses.

The Copelands lived in one at the time and now share its history with tourists visiting the town's last remaining tent house But before the world of air conditioning and permanent housing in the north-west Queensland town, tent houses were the only option, with canvas sides which were rolled up to let the breeze in — and unfortunately the dust too.
Now there is only one tent house left in town which tourists flock to year after year to get a glimpse of life before fans and air conditioning. If they are lucky and pick a Wednesday to visit, they are greeted at the door by Maureen and Bob Copeland who not only lived in a tent house, but are a font of historical Mount Isa knowledge.Maureen and Bob met while she was working at the miners' mess hall in the early 1950s.
