Three well-respected South Australians have received top-notch recognition in this year’s Australia day honours for their passion and commitment to their profession. The Governor-General at the weekend announced honours and awards for more than 700 Australians, including awards in the Order of Australia , meritorious awards and recognition for distinguished and conspicuous service.

One person honoured has his work deeply tied to some of South Australia’s most infamous crimes. Dedicated regional superintendent and former STAR officer Mark Syrus was one of three police offers in South Australia to receive an Australian Police Medal as part of Australia Day 2025 honours. Speaking to 7NEWS, Syrus said he was overwhelmed at the award but couldn’t take complete credit. “It was a bit surreal and a great honour to receive this award,” he said.

Chinese and Japanese embroidery are two of the oldest traditional art forms and are the most prominent among oriental embroidery today. Margaret Lee is one of few traditionally taught bead and silk embroiderers in Australia, with a talent to show she’s got a true eye for delicate detail. Lee spoke to 7NEWS and said she felt very honoured and humbled to receive an Australia day award. “There’s a bigger part of community, not just me, that has brought me to this present day award,” she said.
