The monsoon finally arrives in northern Australia, bringing cool relief for some but more unwelcome rain for north Queensland amid unsettled weather across the country.

The monsoon has finally arrived in northern Australia, bringing with it a cool relief for some but more unwelcome rain for north Queensland amid unsettled weather across the country. How said it's the latest start to the monsoon season in Darwin since records began in 1957.

Mr How said renewed areas of heavy rainfall were predicted from the Gulf Country through to Townsville over the next 24 to 36 hours. Major flood warnings remain in place for the Cape, Upper Burdekin, Flinders, Haughton and Herbert Rivers.BOM is monitoring a tropical low off the coast of Western Australia's Pilbara region which could become the first tropical cyclone to make landfall this season.

"This is the time of year when we do see those tropical cyclone crossings for the Pilbara. It is sort of the most tropical cyclone prone part of the Australian coastline, so residents are pretty used to this, but we are reminding people to be prepared."
