Canberra hot air balloon sculpture Skywhale was damaged by strong winds during a recent display in Ballarat and will require repairs before returning to the skies.
Piccinini said the balloon pilot described "bullets of wind" ripping a 1-metre gash in the seam between two of Skywhale's breasts.
"Both Skywhale and Skywhalepapa are magnificent works of art, but they're also operational aircraft," she said. Ms Pitt said both Skywhale and Skywhalepapa had a "dedicated team that looked after them at the National Gallery".
