An extraordinary map has been created to record Noongar place names of significant Perth locations and how people lived on the land prior to colonisation.
Looking around the park at the top of Wireless Hill, Noongar elder Christine Reich doesn't just see old installations from when it was a World War II communications centre."It's always been a nice little treasure spot hidden over here, and when you're driving around, you'll see Wireless Hill , but yeah, it's Yagan Mia.
"And that map was brought in and out of every meeting, all the workshops, and grew and grew and grew."We had a really solid advisory group of 14 to 15 traditional owners and elders and our cultural advisor, Geri Hayden … they were the project leaders, essentially," she said.The work to share stories told to them by their elders to rediscover, decode and translate the place names has culminated in an exhibition, an interactive online map, a documentary and a podcast.
Stamps of frogs, fish traps, sharks and footprints were created to depict the journeys and the food of the area. "It's about reviving the Noongar place names and identifying them and telling the meaning so that our future generations know that we do have a culture, we do have a law," she said.
