An Indigenous elder, who delivered a contentious Welcome to Country ceremony before an AFL semi-final in Sydney, has broken his silence.
Mr Kerin's Welcome to Country raised eyebrows when he explained why the ceremony was given at events.“A Welcome to Country is not a welcome to Australia. A number of public figures including Indigenous leader Warren Mundine, Senator Pauline Hanson and Indigenous AFL great Matthew Stokes spoke out this week and said the ceremony was being overused. "With all the feedback I think we can sit back and just look at the absolute stupidity and the ignorance of what people are saying," he said.Senator Pauline Hanson, who labelled the Welcome to Country ceremony"divisive" in the Senate on Tuesday, said Mr Kerin's latest remarks would only add more fuel to the discussion that the ceremony causes"harmful division".
