The ACCC’s crackdown is part of its product safety priorities this year and comes after it said two infant deaths a year were associated with inclined sleep products.
The ACCC will investigate infant sleep products and double down on unsafe children’s goods as part of its product safety priorities this year, and use surveillance technology to enforce online product safety.
Toys for children under three, products containing button batteries and toppling furniture are among the products in the sights of the consumer watchdog.“Addressing issues for young children, who are among the most vulnerable consumers, is our highest product safety priority,” Lowe told the National Consumer Congress in Melbourne on Thursday. “Consumers expect the products they purchase to be safe, and these priorities are critical to minimise the risks posed by unsafe products.
The ACCC will also implement strategies such as an education campaign to prevent injuries and deaths associated with infant sleep products including incline sleep products, bassinets and cots, bouncers and sleep aids. “We’ll be conducting investigations into sleep products of the highest concern and will take enforcement action where appropriate,” Lowe said.
“We’ll also seek to increase consumer awareness about the safety risks for infant sleep products to support more informed buying decisions,” she said. The ACCC will also consider developing mandatory standards for infant sleep products after introducing mandatory standards for button batteries in June last year.
