Australia's competition chief Rod Sims says he's 'delighted' that the US Government has Google in its sights in one of the biggest anti-trust lawsuits of the past 20 years.
Australia's competition chief Rod Sims says he has been having "a lot of talk" with US regulators about Google's monopoly power. The ACCC has already filed two lawsuits against Google in the past year
Facebook and Google may be forced to pay for news content if the media bargaining code is passed into law He said he was also "delighted" that the US Department of Justice decided to file a lawsuit against the internet giant for"This is ... one of the biggest anti-trust cases in the world in the last 10 or 20 years," said Mr Sims, chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission , during a speech at the National Press Club in Canberra.Unsurprisingly, Google has fought back against the DOJ's accusations, calling it a "deeply flawed lawsuit".
"People use Google because they choose to, not because they're forced to, or because they can't find alternatives," Google's senior vice-president of global affairs, Kent Walker, wrote in a blog post. "This lawsuit would do nothing to help consumers. To the contrary, it would artificially prop up lower-quality search alternatives, raise phone prices, and make it harder for people to get the search services they want to use."But Mr Sims strongly disagreed with the tech giant's claims, noting that Google pays a huge sum of money to Apple each year, to be the default search engine on its phones and computers.
