Hussein Chamas allegedly fled a controversial rehabilitation centre, weeks after the Herald revealed police were concerned about security lapses.

An accused drug lord has been caught on the northernmost tip of the Northern Territory, three weeks after he allegedly fled a controversial rehabilitation centre north of Sydney using forged documents.

His barrister, Carolyn Davenport SC, told the court her client had been arrested by the Australian Federal Police in Gove, a remote peninsula on the furthest tip of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. Connect Global’s founder has now left Australia to care for a relative, half of its residents are gone, and the latest incident could seal the fate of the embattled rehab, insiders say.

The suspected forgery went undiscovered, and no alarm was raised until Chamas failed to return to Swan Bay on January 12. “This is very concerning occurrence, and my community is suffering a lot of stress about this alleged criminal potentially being in our local community,” Port Stephens Councillor Giacomo Arnott said.

Staff are angry about Chamas’ alleged deception, which could not have come at a worse time for the rehab centre.revealed police had warned the NSW Supreme Court in a bail hearing that five people had absconded from Swan Bay in less than a year, and 15 had breached bail conditions such as bans on mobile phones.
