The ACT Greens leader says they will not disendorse a candidate for Murrumbidgee, Harini Rangarajan, who made a blog post in 2023 comparing Osama bin Laden to Jesus Christ, in the upcoming territory election.
ACT Greens leader says candidate's post comparing Osama bin Laden to Jesus Christ is 'not a reflection of our party as a whole' ACT Greens leader says candidate's post comparing Osama bin Laden to Jesus Christ is 'not a reflection of our party as a whole' ACT Greens leader Shane Rattenbury says a controversial blog post by a party candidate in which she compared Osama bin Laden to Jesus Christ is not a reflection of the party as a whole.
ACT Greens Leader Shane Rattenbury says he first heard about the blog post when his office was contacted by the ABC.Mr Rattenbury said the ACT Greens had a vetting process which included potential candidates providing all social media accounts to the party, but "the particular pieces were missed in that vetting process".
He acknowledged the post would be "concerning and confronting" for members of the community, but said Ms Rangarajan had been very clear they were creative works that "do not reflect her personal views". In a blog dated August 20, 2023 titled "On martyrdom", the post read "I day dream about dying brutally for my country, my family, my lovers".
Left is the original version of Ms Rangarajan's post and right shows how it was edited after she was contacted by the ABC. Difference checker tool used was DALIL.ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr, who leads a coalition government alongside the ACT Greens, said the posts were an issue for that party to deal with.
"Whether it's creative writing or otherwise, probably best to have removed that and to be clear that that's not something that either the candidate or the party stands for," Mr Barr said.
