The English Greyhound Derby is due to run this evening
Towcester Racecourse has been disrupted ahead of the English Greyhound Derby. At around 12pm, three supporters of Animal Rising entered the track and climbed a scaffold holding a large TV screen in its centre.
The English Greyhound Derby is due to run at 9.15pm this evening. The group said it aims to cancel the race, worth £175,000 for the winner, widely known as the most prestigious event in the industry with a history dating back to 1927.Alistair Stewart, 27, an MSc student at University College London and one of those taking action, said: "We’re here today to send a clear message that we need a national conversation about our broken relationship with other animals and nature.
Yesterday three activists from the group were arrested in a Northamptonshire Police-led operation. Two men, aged 41 and 26, together with a 33-year-old woman were arrested after the Force executed warrants during an out-of-county operation supported by officers from the Metropolitan Police. Chief Inspector Pete Basham, who is leading the operation, said: “We have conducted warrants outside Northamptonshire as part of a wider operation to stop those intent on disrupting sporting events.
"Building up to Saturday’s final, we accepted an invitation to meet members of Animal Rising so they could communicate their plans for the evening while we had a platform to reiterate our core concerns. Firstly, Animal Rising made it clear under no circumstances would any of its members trespass onto the track in the process of a race taking place.
