The Flinders Medical Centre emergency department will receive its first major upgrade in almost a decade as the SA Government battles an ongoing ramping crisis.
The Flinders Medical Centre emergency department will double in size, making it the biggest in South Australia, in a bid to ease hospital overcrowding and ramping. It will not include new infrastructure, but a reallocation of resourcesThe $86 million expansion, announced on Thursday morning, will include 12 extra emergency department beds, 12 extra treatment bays, an additional six flexible beds and 45 more staff.
Health Minister Stephen Wade said it would restore Adelaide's southern health region to the same, if not better, capacity than before the former Labor government's controversial Transforming Health reforms. "The expansion here at the Flinders Medical Centre is long overdue. The last redevelopment was in 2010, the ED reached its build capacity a couple of years later," Mr Wade said. The Transforming Health policy resulted in the closure of the Daw Park Repatriation Hospital — which has since reopened — and the downsizing of the Noarlunga Hospital.
