The AFL introduced a controversial reduction to the men’s quarters to 16 minutes in 2020 when officials anticipated - and eventually introduced - a fixture squeeze during the COVID-19 pandemic, but traditional timings returned in 2021. With the league expansion now complete, each team do not yet play all the others throughout the home and away fixture, and there have been calls on the AFL to extend the season.
