One of the first of its kind in the market and the very first for Adidas, the bra was designed in partnership with Monica Harrington, a lingerie stylist and consultant who works with teens, post-natal women, transgender women, and women who have had mastectomy surgery.
The sports bra shape was designed to avoid the usual scarring areas around the breasts and comes with a front zipper so that the wearer doesn’t need to uncomfortably stretch their arms up to slip it on. The straps can also be adjusted according to swelling size, and there are hidden pockets sewn inside for prostheses. Starring in the campaign for the Adidas by Stella McCartney release is British boxer and breast cancer survivor Michele Aboro.
Thanks to brands like Savage x Fenty by Rihanna, whose epic, empowering Spring 2020 show and performance was one of the most talked about this fashion month, ideas about body-positivity and inclusivity are finally at the forefront of the conversation around underwear. Now, McCartney and Adidas are pushing the needle even further in this direction with a bra that is targeted specifically towards survivors who are also athletes.
