Melbourne is under threat to lose the AFL’s night of nights for just the second time in 97 years as part of a first-of-its-kind raid.

With the AFL on Wednesday announcing all ten Victorian-based footy clubs will be based in Queensland for the remainder of the home and away season, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has now entered the race to lure the Brownlow Medal to the Sunshine State.

McLachlan’s declaration that the grand final remains scheduled to be played at the MCG for now was in stark contrast to Palaszczuk’s bold suggestion that her state had earned the right to host the biggest day on the footy calendar because it had saved the league in its hour of need. Now the state leader has boldly declared the Brownlow Medal should also be moved to Queensland this year where it would be a first for football with Queensland never having previously hosted the event.

The 1999 Brownlow Medal hosted in Sydney is the only time the AFL’s night of nights hasn’t been hosted in Melbourne in the 97-year history of the event.“Of course I would love to see the Brownlow Medal here in the Sunshine State,” The Crown Palladium, which has hosted the event for the past 17 years reportedly has hosting rights for the event through to the end of the 2021 season — but all bets could be off if coronavirus restrictions keep the league out of Victoria for the entire season.
