What's in a name? Debate over whether AFL should become AFLM to match AFLW.
The AFL has quickly moved to quell speculation it may rename the men's competition AFLM after football operations boss Steve Hocking said the league was open to the prospect to be consistent with the fledgling women's competition, which is called AFLW.
"I'm happy to answer that, I just think that a lot of what we've touched on here is just tradition," Hocking said. Cricket Australia has changed it's naming conventions to label its men's and women's national teams in the same way, and Australian captain Meg Lanning said at a recent Future Women breakfast in Melbourne that cricket had recognised the importance of the issue.
"At the end of the day it is just sport and even the fans and kids coming through, the best thing for me is when young boys come to the cricket and want our autographs the same as they do for the men."
