The West has a long, complicated relationship with Africa. This writer says there's a long way to go.

Citing films like 1985's Out of Africa, he says depictions are often "Africans in tribal groups and small villages, waiting for someone from the West to come in and save them".

"The film really tried to depict a country that was independent, that stood on its own, that was specific — with accents, language and dress … [It was] free and had its destiny in its own hands. And that imagining is incredibly important, because it's so rare to see," Mr Faloyin says. "This is something that we see especially in the development industry and charities — this idea that goodness can only come to Africa when it's presented by a white person," he says.He cites the Kony 2012 campaign, a viral short film made by a US NGO to call attention to Ugandan war criminal Joseph Kony .

He takes aim at the 1984 charity song Do They Know It's Christmas? for "condens[ing] all of the worst stereotypes of the region as one large failed state into a pleasant four-minute jingle".
