Up to 40,000 residents risk flood evacuation in Sydney’s west by 2040: Perrottet | Laura_R_Chung
Tens of thousands of Hawkesbury-Nepean residents will be at risk of flooding by 2040 if development goes ahead without further mitigation measures, an inquiry has found.
Increased demand from a growing population has led to too many homes being built or slated to be built on flood-prone land, the report,, found. In the past 70 years, the Hawkesbury-Nepean region has transformed from farming land to house about 150,000 people. The report, by former police commissioner Mick Fuller and former chief scientist Professor Mary O’Kane, did not make any recommendations about the controversial raising of the Warragamba Dam wall, but said doing so would give more time for people to evacuate. Many local councils, environment and cultural groups have spoken out against the idea.Blue Mountains City Council Mayor Mark Greenhill said raising the wall would damage cultural and heritage sites within the historic area.
It also found that future developments in the area need to include evaluations of existing and anticipated risks, as well as ensure flood risk management works with the economic and social needs of the community and greater resilience of infrastructure.Hawkesbury-Nepean resident Suzette Turner, who lives in Shanes Park about 50 kilometres west of Sydney, has lived through four floods in the last two years.
