After everything was destroyed by floods, National Art School steps up for students | lennyannlow

When the record-breaking floods of late February inundated Lismore they took away the creative output of hundreds of school children.

After two school years affected by the coronavirus pandemic, losing months of HSC creative work and planning hit visual arts students and staff hard. Tuition, from two National Art School teachers, was free and a car-load of donated materials, including canvases, paints, brushes, charcoal, paper and pencils, driven by Lorraine Kypiotis, head of undergraduate studies at the NAS, and instigator of the workshops, arrived on Wednesday.Simpson says not every Year 12 visual arts student at Richmond River High, now operating from Lismore High School’s campus, is planning a painting work for the HSC but all attended the workshop.

“Because Lismore flooded we have almost no shops anymore,” Simpson says. “If we needed canvases or scissors or glue or paint, we just had nothing.”Schools in the area have received visual art materials from the NSW Department of Education. Donations, including from other schools, have also made their way to students.
