After lockout laws and COVID, new venues suggest Sydney nightlife hotting up | michaelkoziol
A flurry of venue openings in the inner city is sparking hope Sydney’s nightlife is about to rebound after a lost decade of lockout laws, COVID-19 restrictions, over-regulation and the lure of Netflix. You just have to know where to go.
But in other ways the offering is more sophisticated. The venue – capacity 900 – will be pub-style during the day, with burgers named after Kings Cross Streets and a sports bar. At night, it becomes a club open until 3.30am, with a second DJ upstairs and a cocktail bar on the top floor. ARQ owner Shadd Donesi confirmed he was in discussions and “moving forward at this stage”, but it was not a done deal. “I do believe Sydney really needs more entertainment venues of good quality to open,” he said, especially in advance of WorldPride in March. “The community would love it.”A new LGBTQ nightclub, Heaven, opened last month in the Oxford Street space where trailblazing club Capriccio’s began in 1969.
It will have a downstairs gallery and cocktail bar, an 80-seat or 110-standing cabaret venue on the middle floor and a 50-seat theatre on the top level, along with a speakeasy called the Green Room. There will be three performances a night including an 11.30pm show, with a licence until 3am. Took says there’s a long way to go to resuscitate the city’s nightlife and it won’t happen overnight. But “there is a thirst, that’s the one thing that’s very evident”.
