Aged care staff assume everyone old living has dementia, hearing told
A geriatric expert says organising for an aged care resident with a mental illness to see a specialist was next to impossible unless a patient was very sick.
"Historically, the public health mental health services really do stick to the pointy end of presentations ... We have a saying, you know, unless they're actively suicidal or actively psychotic, you've got no chance of getting your referral through," Dr Argo told a hearing in Melbourne. Counsel assisting the commission Richard Knowles, SC, said the evidence showed the needs of older people with mental health concerns were not being adequately addressed across the sector.
Witness UX told the commission her mother's severe depression and paranoia, which had resulted in extended stays in a mental health facility for older people, was often ignored by staff at the residential facility.
