Thousands of aged care workers have notified unprecedented industrial action next week over concerns about low pay and understaffing.

, the Morrison government has left the matter to the commission. Both sides have said they will abide by what the commission decides.United Workers Union aged care director Carolyn Smith said workers had been forced to take “unprecedented strike action because of pay and conditions that are failing workers and failing residents”.

“Aged care workers were promised the [aged care] royal commission would fix things. It didn’t – in fact things are worse.” He said the UWU’s action was “very disappointing because it will directly impact on residents and in the current market the sector’s already down staff due to people isolating due to COVID”.He argued the strike was “futile” as providers and the government were all awaiting the outcome of unions’ work value pay case before the Fair Work Commission.

The eight affected aged care providers employ more than 12,000 workers across 160 facilities. However, only about 50 facilities are participating in the strike.Aegis employs about 3400 staff across 29 facilities, including almost 500 UWU members.
