The U.S. Air Force launched an unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile late Thursday from Vandenberg Space Force Base in southern California.
Air Force officials insist the launch wasn’t the result of current world events and said similar missions have occurred more than 300 times in the past.
Air Force officials said events such as Thursday’s test ICBM launch are intended to verify the accuracy and reliability of the weapon system, providing “valuable data” to ensure a safe and secure nuclear deterrent. Thursday’s test launch was conducted by crews from the 91st Missile Wing at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota.
