The Prime Minister has doubled down on his message to Beijing to remove trade sanctions in a bid to repair Australia and China's relationship that he suggested had 'a long way to go'.

Canberra and Beijing have begun face-to-face communications again following a diplomatic freeze that lasted almost three years under the Morrison government.Defence Minister Richard Marles met his Chinese counterpart almost two weeks agoTrade sanctions - were placed on several industries in 2020 after then-prime minister Scott Morrison called for an inquiry into the origins of COVID-19 - impacted a number of Australian exports such as timber, coal, barley, meat and wine.

Mr Albanese doubled down on his previous message to Beijing during an interview with ABC's Leigh Sales on the 7:30 program. "They're damaging the Australian economy and jobs, but they're causing damage to the Chinese economy."Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin responded to the initial sanction remarks made by Mr Albanese.
