The Prime Minister has been long time critic on national security grounds of the deal to lease prized asset to a Chinese company.
A fresh review into the Chinese ownership of the Port of Darwin will be conducted, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, amid ongoing calls from defence experts for the lease to be terminated on national security grounds.last year reportedly found no reason to axe the lease.Alex Ellinghausen
“What I’ve said is what I said prior to the election and I will do what I said I would do on this and every other issue, which is we’ll have a review of the circumstances of the port,” he said in some of his most forward-leaning comments yet.“The chief minister is conscious of the fact that we will do that, and we’ll do that in an orderly way.”
Mr Albanese said Labor, when in opposition, had supported the Morrison government’s law to allow foreign agreements to be cancelled because foreign policy should be set by the federal government. “An alternative is to have an Australian infrastructure investor or operator buy out the lease, like Macquarie. This would be like Telstra buying Digicel in PNG.”
Amid souring relations with China, Mr Morrison commissioned the Defence Department to do another review last year.
