The prime minister is going to Dutton’s own seat of Dickson on Friday to unveil the Labor candidate in the battle for Queensland.
Anthony Albanese will announce a series of candidates in target seats over the next month as Labor gears up for the next federal election, while spooked Liberals accelerate policy development fearing an early poll.
Former treasurer Peter Costello held the seat of Higgins from 1990 to 2009. The Liberal Party held the seat until Katie Allen lost to Labor’s Michelle Ananda-Rajah in 2022.“Many Queenslanders who voted for the Greens ... are disappointed that the Greens have used the influence that they have to stall Labor’s progressive agenda,” Albanese said.
Labor’s move to install candidates across the country comes as voters are increasingly stressed about the cost of living and as tensions simmer in the community over the war in Gaza. The seats of Banks and Lindsay, held by shadow ministers David Coleman and Melissa McIntosh, are also targets but are considered unlikely for Labor. Hughes, held by first-term Liberal MP Jenny Ware, could be in play too.
In addition to Dickson, Forde and Ryan, the ALP is eyeing Leichhardt, which has long been held by retiring MP Warren Entsch, and the seat of Brisbane, held by Greens MP Stephen Bates. Labor MP Graham Perrett is expected to retire in Moreton, with former state secretary Julie-Ann Campbell expected to replace him.
