Industry groups across manufacturing, mining and gas sectors welcomed the government’s willingness to consult over its plans to give the safeguard mechanism teeth, but warned against unintended consequences. “That means we have to take our time to work through what it means for every sector of our industry to make sure those principles are met,” Ms Constable said.“We don’t want to inadvertently cause closures and constrain the most significant export industry of Australia. The economy relies on mining, and we are mindful we need to reduce emissions and also remain competitive.”
“We have also set targets to reduce net equity scope 1 and 2 emissions, and will participate constructively with the government as they design the detail of their policy.”
