Editorial | Anthony Albanese has been cautious in his approach, but has shifted to a more combative style on issues from energy policy to higher education

The role of opposition leader is never easy and it is even harder now because attacking government policy can be interpreted as undermining the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

His policy agenda is, so far, much more cautious than his predecessor Bill Shorten who went to the 2019 election with a wish-list of reforms, which Prime Minister Scott Morrison was able to denigrate as a return to the ALP’s wasteful “tax-and-spend” class war policies. It is a fair point but it will probably not win the ALP many votes in the marginal electorates it needs to win at the next election.
