Albanese returned from five days’ leave on Thursday to confirm the retirements and foreshadow he will unveil a reshuffled ministry on Sunday as a result. Under Labor Party rules, there is a factional and caucus process for nominations and Albanese announced that this process had begun. Burney leaves the indigenous affairs portfolio after entering federal parliament in 2016. Before that, she served in the New South Wales state parliament. Brendan O’Connor has been in federal parliament since 2001 and served as a minister in the Rudd and Gillard governments, taking on the skills and training portfolio under Anthony Albanese.
