Tracy Westerman accuses WA authorities of having 'a love affair with restricting human rights' as they consider a ban on most takeaway alcohol in the Kimberley and Pilbara.

It comes as WA's director of liquor licensing Lanie Chopping continues an independent inquiry into how the state should address alcohol-related harm, including whether all takeaway drinks, except light beer, should beThe inquiry was launched after a 2019 application by former police commissioner Chris Dawson who backed the outright ban; his successor,Alcohol restrictions such as volume limits and restricted opening hours for bottle shops are already enforced across the regions.
Dr Westerman said the existing and proposed restrictions were "dehumanising" and problem drinkers would always find a way to break the rules."People always find a way to access things that they're dependent on."The McGowan government is opposed to the potential ban and has thrown its support behind a trial of the Banned Drinkers Register in the north west as well as WA's Goldfields.
