‘Feeling sorry for us is not good enough’: Sadam Abdusalam says Uyghurs in Australia are sick of reading reports about human rights abuses in Xinjiang and wants more action from the Australian government.
For three years, Sadam Abdusalam watched his newborn grow into a toddler through the screen of a mobile phone.
"First they taking passports - after a few weeks they start putting people to the concentration camps," Mr Abdusalam told SBS News. He says that's because he doesn't need to: he's already experienced the content discussed first-hand, and reading about them causes trauma to resurface. That answer, he says, is to start banning products with links to forced labour in Xinjiang."Feeling sorry for Uyghurs [by reporting about it], is not good enough," he said.
Modern slavery refers to areas of exploitation such as forced labour, debt bondage, child labour, forced marriage, sex trafficking, and other forms of slavery. In the US, there are laws banning the importation of goods linked to Uyghur forced labour, giving customs the power to withhold and release any products they suspect may come from labour camps in Xinjiang.Mr Boersma says adopting a similar policy in Australia, where products are banned rather than solely having reporting obligations, would help fight against modern slavery and the exploitation of Uyghurs.
The report starts by criticising the loose terminology for "extremism" and shows that the CCP's "Strike Hard" campaign has the power to arbitrarily detain Uyghurs simply for having a beard or wearing certain garments. The United Nations report into alleged rights abuses in Xinjiang, China, finds the discriminatory detention of Uyghurs and other Muslims there may constitute crimes against humanity.
