While Tasmanians can shop at 32 Coles and 32 Woolworth supermarkets, there are no Aldi — with the German-owned supermarket giant unlikely to open stores on the island in the near future, it has been revealed.

Tasmania does not have Aldi supermarkets — but does have 32 Coles and 32 Woolworths across the state.

Since 2001, the German-owned supermarket chain, which promotes itself as having "Australia's lowest prices", has opened more than 590 stores in every jurisdiction except the Northern Territory and Tasmania.The story of how Coles and Woolworths came to dominate the supermarket landscape is more than a century in the making.on Thursday, Aldi's chief executive officer Anna McGrath revealed the company has "no current plan" to bring its business to Tasmania.

The Senate inquiry into supermarket prices hears from people who forage for food in bins and from a farmer who says the major supermarkets' quality guidelines are "almost impossible" to meet.

"We're building new stores, we're upgrading our distribution centres and investing into other areas of our supply chain to ensure we can provide our offers to an increasing number of Australians."
