Northern Territory Police took a 32-year-old man, who they believe to be the driver of the vehicle, into custody and seized a Ford Ranger on Sunday afternoon.

The death of a 20-year-old man in an alleged hit-and-run in Alice Springs overnight is being treated as a possible death in custody.

"A full emergency response was provided with that person being taken to Alice Springs Hospital and being declared deceased soon thereafter," he said. A spokesperson for St John Ambulance said they transported a patient from a road crash to Alice Springs Hospital, where he was later declared dead. "It was determined that that person and another were involved in a disturbance on Todd Street in Alice Springs earlier in the morning, just prior to three o'clock," he said."That person was then later taken home and a number of hours later it's believed that he left his residence and was struck by this vehicle."
