Alice Springs’s crime crisis has experienced a “dramatic improvement” since the Northern Territory government implemented a two-day ban on takeaway alcohol in the community, says Alice Springs GP Dr John Boffa.

“Senior police are describing the data they’ve got on Monday and Tuesday this week as unprecedented,” Dr Boffa told Sky News Australia. “Domestic violence incidents, which were running extremely high, were much, much lower as well, about a quarter of what they were. “So we’ve seen some immediately positive impacts from the restrictions that were put in place, which are different to Stronger Futures, but we know takeaway-free days are very effective.
“It’s giving us the circuit-breaker we needed while the deliberations happen about where we go next with bringing back Stronger Futures.”
