Authorities have expanded beach closures to include Bondi, Bronte, Tamarama, Clovelly, Coogee, Gordons Bay and northern Maroubra after more 'tar balls' were discovered washed ashore.
Authorities have been forced to shut down beaches from Bondi to Maroubra as mysterious, black" tar balls " have continued to wash up along the coastline. Picture: NewsWire / Damian Shaw Preliminary testing results identified the debris as"hydrocarbon-based pollutant" which the council said was"consistent with the makeup of tar balls". Due to the safety concerns, Sydneysiders do not yet know when they will be able to visit the beach next, while nippers and surf life saving events this weekend may be cancelled.
"The safety of the community is our first priority. That’s why council has taken the precaution to close these beaches," Mr Parker said on Thursday.
