The Australian Labor Party’s National President Wayne Swan has shut down claims of an emerging split within the Albanese government over its stance on the ongoing Israel-Palestine war.

A political squabble broke out on Thursday after two Labor frontbenchers put the spotlight on the mass civilian casualties in Gaza being caused by Israel’s retaliatory strikes and said Palestinians were being “collectively punished for Hamas’ barbarism”.

“Israel has a right to exist, it has a right to defend itself, it has a right to respond to Hamas… it has a right to eliminate Hamas, and all members of the Labor party share that ambition,” he said. In the wake of the outspoken support for Palestine, senior Coalition members including Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley, have called on the Prime Minister to clear the air on where the government stands on the matter.
