A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal's western Jajarkot area, the US Geological Survey said. The quake was felt as far away as New Delhi.
Rescue workers in Nepal have begun digging through the rubble of collapsed houses with their bare hands, searching for survivors after the country's worst earthquake in eight years killed 157 people and shook buildings as far away as New Delhi. Nepal's National Seismological Centre said the quake was a magnitude 6.4 but the German Research Centre for Geosciences later downgraded the magnitude to 5.7 and the US Geological Survey pegged it as a magnitude 5.6.
I am out in the crowd of terrified residents. We are trying to find details of damages," police official Santosh Rokka told Reuters by phone. Rescue work was expected to be slow as emergency teams must first clear roads blocked by landslides in many places. Helicopters and small planes have been asked to be ready to join the effort.
