In Australia's Top End, traditional owners are pushing for a cross-cultural education that will help children live between two worlds. It's a battle these communities have fought for decades — and now they're celebrating.

In the stone country of west Arnhem Land, in the remote Northern Territory, two remote homelands have realised their dreams of educational independence.

The school is run by the Nawarddeken Academy, which has now, at the request of traditional owners, established campuses at Manmoyi and Mamadawerre. "This is the important thing for us. To teach our kids not only in our Bininj [culture] but also in balanda [white man] education. Both. We'd like to see that, so our kids can move along both ways."The day was also the launch of the centrepiece of Nawarddeken Academy's bi-cultural curriculum — the Kuwarddewardde Malkno seasonal calendar.
