‘An effective cut’: Albanese government refuses to cover rising aged care costs | Dana_Adele
The Albanese government is refusing to cover aged care providers’ rising costs, including a wage increase awarded this Friday, surprising providers who expected funding to rise under Labor.
Sadler said the 1.7 per cent increase for 2022-23 was “patently inadequate” given the sector’s rising costs and was “an effective cut” to funding. Workers on a range of awards in the sector will receive 4.6 per cent wage rises – adding $41 a week to a full-time worker’s pay – and a 0.5 superannuation increase on July 1 to comply with a Fair Work Commission ruling, while food and other items are affected by general inflation.
“We are also drafting an urgent Bill to present to parliament in the first sitting, to introduce a new funding model for residential care that will have an average funding increase of nearly 10 per cent per resident,” she said.
