It's been two long years of cancelled trips and dashed hopes for Darwin couple Molly and Jack Upstill, with family locked out of the NT by COVID lockdowns and ever-changing border restrictions. But today they are finally getting the reunion they've been waiting for.
An engagement, a marriage, pregnancy and then the birth of their first child: For Molly and Jack Upstill, the pandemic has been filled with momentous life milestones. The Northern Territory has opened its borders to all vaccinated arrivals, and dropped quarantine requirements
"I know that my mum has really struggled a lot not being able to be there for the birth … and I have struggled without them." For the first time in months, travellers from across Australia are allowed to walk into the arms of their loved ones straight from the plane. Jack and Molly didn't quite have the wedding they had planned, surrounded by friends and family. Instead they opted for a quiet affair and installed a pool in their back yard with the saved money.
"It was just way too uncertain at the time and the borders were closing and when you have to lock in numbers at venues and organise catering – we just put it in the too hard basket, and we decided to elope.
