Remote and disadvantaged communities should be helped and supported by our lawmakers because they are disadvantaged, not because of their race.
Now, there may be something I am missing here, or failing to understand, and I’d be happy to be shown the Voice is not racist.
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.”How can that be anything but racist? If remote communities suffer from serious disadvantage they should be helped and supported because they are disadvantaged—not because of their race.
And it would not be an honest thing to do. There is no one alive who had land stolen from them by a colonial oppressor. We cannot right the wrong done to our great-grandparents by taking equality out of our constitution and replacing it with racism. He had the profits from his invention stolen from him by a lawyer whose help he sought.
Let’s start talking about all Australians as Australians and stop the pretence that racial differences matter. How can a democratically-elected government function if an Indigenous Voice advises the whole parliament to vote against a government bill? Let’s not be swayed to abandon the great “melting pot” society that modern Australia has built -let’s just do it better.
